Online master's celebration Agricultural Sciences and Food Science

Due to the Corona pandemic, this year's master's ceremony for the Agricultural Sciences and Food Science programs was held without an audience, as it was in 2020, and was broadcast live from the Audimax on June 3, 2021. A record 122 graduates celebrated their graduation online.

Both study programs were honored to welcome ETH Rector Sarah Springman at the beginning of the event. She gave a special welcome speech in honor of the anniversary of 150 years Agricultural Sciences at ETH Zurich and took the opportunity to wish our graduates all the best and congratulate them on their achievement. The ceremony was then officially opened by Shana J. Sturla, Director of Studies Food Science. In the following keynote speech Lukas Böni, who graduated in 2015 with a degree in Food Science, then went on to earn a doctorate and subsequently founded a company, gave an insight into his career and shared some thoughts with the graduates for their start in professional life.

Eight award winners were invited to receive their award in the Audimax:

  • Willi Studer Award for the best graduates in 2020:

- Agricultural Sciences: Julian Rogger

- Food Sciences: Anne Sarbach

  • ETH medals for outstanding master's theses:

- Agricultural Sciences: Lisa Bochsler

- Food Sciences: Alessa Perotti

  • Hochdorf Prize for a Master's thesis in Food Science: Dominik Hug
  • SGLWT Prize for a Master's thesis in Food Science, major in Food Technology: Aline Schneider
  • Wilhelm Schaumann Prize for a Master's thesis in Agricultural Sciences: Jasmin Huser
  • Vontobel Prize for an outstanding doctoral thesis in agricultural sciences: Niklas Möhring

Following the awarding of the Wilhelm-Schaumann-Prize, the delegate of the prize, Prof. Michael Kreuzer, was honored. It was his last master celebration, his retirement is coming up. The delegate of studies, Prof. Susanne E. Ulbrich, acknowledged the merits of Michael Kreuzer and thanked him for his valuable contributions in teaching and research.

The award ceremonies were followed by an entertainment part prepared by the graduates. In their quiz "2 against 83" Prof. Nina Buchmann (Agricultural Sciences) and Prof. Alexander Mathys (Food Science) faced the questions of the quizmaster Deborah Meili against initially 83 graduates. The Profs. were allowed to stay in the game despite wrong answers, but in the end 15 graduates who had answered all questions correctly won!

The highlight of the online celebration was the virtual congratulatory sequence with photos and short videos that the graduates had taken at home.

At the end of the ceremony, photos were played which the graduates had sent in during the ceremony, showing them celebrating with their friends and family.

The ceremony was moderated in a highly professional and very sympathetic manner by Johannes Huber, graduate in Agricultural Sciences, and Caroline Germeaux, graduate in Food Science. The band "Belmondo's Tanzkapelle" provided the musical accompaniment. Because of the Corona protection measures, their contributions were recorded in the morning and played in by video.
