Second Advisor

Every doctoral student is supervised by at least two persons: the supervisor of the doctoral thesis and a second advisor.

In agreement with the doctoral student, the supervisor nominates an academically qualified person with proven expertise who provides the doctoral candidate with additional specialist support and task-related advice.

The second advisor is notified to the ETH Doctoral Administration by using the corresponding form. The form can be found on the student portal.

Deadline

The second advisor should be appointed as early as possible, but at the latest 10 months after provisional admission of the doctoral student, when the doctoral plan has to be submitted.

Exception

Doctoral students whose research plan has been approved and who will have their doctoral examination before 30 June 2022 are not required to report a second advisor.

Please consult the student portal for further information on second advisors.
