Inaugural award ceremony James Mitchell Award for Excellence in Collaborative Science
In a moving ceremony, the first James Mitchell Award for Excellence in Collaborative Science was presented on June 8, 2021. The awardee Gabriele Fontana introduced his research to the guests who were mainly present remotely in front of screens due to Corona measures.
The award ceremony was opened by Sarah Mitchell*, who had joined ETH Zurich in early 2020 with James Mitchell to establish the Healthy Aging Laboratory. She led through the event, which began with an introduction by Prof. Laura Nyström, deputy head of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. She spoke about the idea behind the award and the legacy of James Mitchell, who passed away suddenly in November 2020. Prof. Ori Bar-Nur then acknowledged the merits of the prize winner Gabriele Fontana and explained the decision of the award selection committee as its chairman. In his lecture "The mitochondrial common deletion is a biomarker for the exposure to UVA and aging in human skin fibroblasts" Gabriele Fontana presented a current topic of his research activities.
The certificate for the award was presented by Elisabeth Ligthart, James Mitchell's widow, after a personal and moving speech.
The ceremony was broadcast live from the ETH Zurich Audimax. The recording is available on the ETH Zurich video portal.
