New Professor at D-HEST: Dr. Xiao-Hua Qin
13 December 2023 - At its meeting on 6 and 7 December 2023 the ETH Board appointed at D-HEST:
Dr. Xiao-Hua Qin, currently Senior Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich, as Assistant Professor of Biomaterials Engineering in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. Quote ETH News: "Xiaohua Qin’s research focuses on developing novel biomaterials and advanced manufacturing processes for cutting-edge applications in biomedicine, for which he received a 2022 ERC Starting Grant subsidised by SERI. He has published a long list of peer-reviewed articles, and two of his four patents are already in use in the medical technology industry. His appointment will further strengthen the links between the research areas of biomaterials engineering, biomechanics and medical technology."
Dr. Olivier Lambercy and Dr. Peter Wick awarded the title "Professor"
22 September 2023 - The ETH Board appointed two new Adjunct Professors at D-HEST:
Dr. Olivier Lambercy, currently Senior Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich. Quote ETH News: "Olivier Lambercy’s research is situated at the intersection of medical technology and neuroscience. He is internationally acclaimed for his interdisciplinary research and has registered five patents. Since 2022 he has been Co-Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory and Principal Investigator at the Singapore-ETH Centre, as part of the “Future Health Technologies” programme."
Dr. Peter Wick, currently Lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich and Head of Laboratory at Empa. Quote ETH News: "Peter Wick works at the interface between materials science and health, with particular reference to the safety of nanomaterials. He is an internationally recognised expert who has been invited to serve on various bodies, including the Swiss National COVID-19 Science Task Force, and as a consultant on the “Action Plan for Synthetic Nanomaterials” for the Federal Office of Public Health."
Professor Johannes Bohacek promoted as Associate Professor at D-HEST
22 September 2023 - The ETH Board promoted Professor Johannes Bohacek, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, as Associate Professor of Molecular and Behavioural Neuroscience in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. Quote ETH News: "Johannes Bohacek’s research focuses on understanding the molecular basis of stress, with particular attention to specific areas of the brain. Thanks to successful collaborations and his extensive network, his laboratory is ideally placed to have a significant impact in various areas of biomedicine, ranging from molecular and circuit neuroscience through to technological developments and translational medicine. Johannes Bohacek has won many awards for his research and teaching."
New Professor at D-HEST: Nina Cabezas Wallscheid
25 May 2023 - The ETH Board appointed a new Professor at D-HEST:
Dr. Nina Cabezas Wallscheid, currently Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany, as Full Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Ageing. She will start her new position at D-HEST in April 2024. Quote ETH News: "Nina Cabezas Wallscheid investigates haemopoietic stem cell pools, with particular attention to the effects of different dietary habits. Her goal is to produce findings that can be used to combat human diseases such as leukaemia. She received an ERC Starting Grant in 2017 and serves on various committees. Her appointment includes a planned collaboration with Kantonsspital Baden, as well as with the departments of haematology, oncology and clinical nutrition at the University Hospitals of Zurich and Bern."
New Professor at D-HEST: Alexander Harms
16 Mar 2023 - The ETH Board appointed a new Professor at D-HEST:
Dr. Alexander Harms, currently Junior Group Leader at the University of Basel, as Assistant Professor of Molecular Phage Biology. Quote ETH News: "Alexander Harms studies the molecular biology of bacteriophages. The principal aim of his research is to enable newly discovered processes to be used in biotechnological applications or to combat bacterial infections. He was awarded an SNSF Starting Grant. This appointment is an ideal opportunity for the department to strengthen research and teaching in the field of molecular biology. Interactions and synergies with the Department of Biology and Zurich University Hospital are also being planned."

Professor Katrien De Bock promoted as Full Professor at D-HEST
16 Mar 2023 - The ETH Board has promoted Professor Katrien De Bock, currently Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, as Full Professor of Exercise and Health in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. Quote ETH News: "Katrien De Bock studies muscle physiology and the processes involved in adapting to physical training and immobilisation. She has made a significant contribution to solving current health problems in collaboration with the ETH institutions active in these areas, as well as with other partner institutions such as Schulthess Clinic. This committed teacher has an impressive list of publications to her name and her contributions to the field of research are in demand throughout the world. She has received numerous awards, including an ERC Starting Grant in 2017."
