Portrait Regula Furrer

Dr Regula Furrer is a postdoctoral researcher in the team of Prof. Christoph Handschin at the external pageBiozentrum of the University of Basel, investigating the molecular mechanisms that regulate physiological and patho-physiological processes in skeletal muscle, as seen during training or muscle wasting conditions, respectively. After finishing her MSc in 2008 in Human Movement Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam (Netherlands), she pursued her academic career at the same institute, studying the adaptive responses of muscle and bone tissue to training on a physiological as well as molecular level. After receiving her PhD in 2013, she started to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. One of her projects aimed at understanding the systemic effects of exercise and the related health-enhancing effects by inter-organ cross-talk. She discovered that exercise ameliorates cancer-related anemia by mitigating metabolic and inflammatory dysregulation.
