About the awardee

Dr Gabriele Alessandro Fontana is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory of Toxicology at ETH Zürich in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. He completed a BSc in 2004 in Biological Sciences and a MSc in 2007 in Biology and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy). In 2011 he completed a PhD in Translational and Molecular Medicine at the University of Milano-Bicocca, studying how oxidative stress impairs gene expression and alternative splicing. From 2013 to 2018 he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (Basel, Switzerland), where he uncovered molecular determinants orchestrating the repair of DNA double-stranded breaks within nuclear compartments. His current research is focused on finding novel biomarkers for the detrimental effects of UV radiation on human skin, and how they are connected to molecular events leading to skin aging and/or photoaging.
